January 2014 “วันเด็ก”
Children’s
Day is recognized on various days in many places around the world, to honor
children globally.
It
was started by the World Conference for the Well-Being of Children in 1925.
In
Thailand, Children’s Day was established in 1955, and is marked [observed] on
the second Saturday in January each year. This special day was designated as a time to
show the importance of kids, who are the future of the nation.
Children
look forward to this day, because their parents take them out to different
places that are not normally open to the public, such as Royal Thai Military
installations, where children can play inside an army tank, or the Government
House, where they have the
opportunity to view the Prime Minister's office and sit in her chair, and The
Royal Thai Air Force, where children are invited to go and explore the aircraft. Sadly, this year, because of the political
problem, Government House will not be on the list.
Nevertheless,
every year, on this day, The Prime Minister announces a theme or slogan to the children
to remind them what characteristics Thai children should have. This year, the slogan is: ”กตัญญู รู้หน้าที่ เป็นเด็กดี มีวินัย สร้างไทยให้มั่นคง”, or, in English, “Thai children should show gratitude,
know their duty, be a good and disciplined person, and build strong Thai
solidarity”.
Children’s
Day touches the heart of all of us, as we remember the happiness and innocence
of childhood.
